Company F was formed in January, 1862, at Mobile, Alabama. It was attached to the Department of the Gulf. In January, 1864, it was attached to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The unit was stationed at Mobile, Alabama, or nearby throughout the war. They participated in the conflicts at Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, Spanish Fort, and Fort Blakely. On May 4, 1865, 64 officers and men of the 2nd surrendered to Union Forces, with Lieutenant Colonel James H. Hallonquist in command of the 2nd Battalion.
