Our loving father LaRoy "Bud" Ross, age 87, of Ely, Nevada passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2011 surrounded by his family. Bud was born on October 8, 1923 in Delta, the 7th child born to James Melvin and Mary Ann Hopkins Ross. He was raised on the family farm until he left to become a miner in Kimberly, Nevada in 1941. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Navy where he was an Electricians Mate on the USS Tennessee, based in the Pacific Theater. On December 21, 1944 he married Beth Hilton (deceased 2003) in Ely, Nevada. They later settled in White Pine County where they raised four children. Bud worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation as a journeyman electrician until he retired in 1987.
Bud is survived by his son: Mel Ross of McGill, NV; daughters: Beverly (Keith) Vierling of Lake Elsinore, CA; and Brenda (Joe) Zigich of West Jordan, UT; son-in-law: Lyle Norcross of Ely, NV. Also survived by his grandchildren: Gabe and Nathan Ross; Jason (Sonja), Eric (Jeannie), and Andy Vierling; Cameron (Jennifer) and Casey (Stephanie) Norcross; Chelsea (Cody) Nicholes; Baylie Zigich; great-grandchildren: Kyriana and Aidan Vierling; Kylie, Jacob, and Madison Norcross.
Preceded in death his wife: Beth; his daughter: Debbie Norcross; infant son: James Hugh; granddaughter: Courtney Norcross; both parents, 2 sisters, 5 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bud was an avid BYU and Utah Jazz sports fan. He later developed a passion for Nevada Wolfpack football where his grandson Cameron played and continues to coach. He also enjoyed fishing with his family and gardening.
Viewing will be held at the Nickle Mortuary at 11 am on Monday, September 12, 2011 with graveside services following at noon at the Delta Cemetery.
In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bud's honor to Home Health Services of Nevada, c/o Marie Carrick, 685 Lyons Avenue, Ely, NV 89301.
Dad had a powerful presence, but was a gentle man who positively impacted many lives. We love and will always miss you . Rest in peace.
