US Congressman. He was born in New York, New York, and was educated in local common schools, later studying medicine and graduating from the prestigious College of Physicians and Surgeons which is now the medical department of Columbia University in New York in 1818. After his education, he was admitted to medical practice in New York City before relocating to Paramus, New Jersey. After moving to New Jersey he decided to enter politics. He then ran for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Whig, he then served New Jersey's Twenty-Fifth Congress as an At-Large Delegate in the United States House of Representatives from 1837 to 1839. He also wanted to serve New Jersey's Twenty-Sixth Congress in 1839 but after presenting his credentials, he was denied permission to do so. He, however, was elected again as a Whig to represent New Jersey's Twenty-Seventh Congress as an At-Large Delegate in the United States House of Representatives from 1841 to 1843. He was not a candidate for renomination to serve New Jersey's Twenty-Eighth Congress in 1842. After his final term in the United States Congress expired on March 4, 1843, he returned to Paramus, New Jersey, and resumed his practice of medicine. He later moved to Passaic, New Jersey, and passed away there on November 8, 1856, at the age of 58. He was buried first in the Paramus Church Cemetery in Ridgewood, New Jersey, but his remains were removed to the Paramus Church Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey. His remains were moved once more and he was finally buried at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson, New Jersey, in the Aycrigg Family Plot. His former home, the Aycrigg Mansion, which was built in 1848 in Passaic, New Jersey, was named to the National Register of Historic Places on April 29, 1982. The Aycrigg Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey, is also named for him.
