When I was a small child, visiting during the Summers (1940s - 1950s), Emma worked -- as a "piece operator" sewing the heel sections for Native American "Indian" beaded mocasins -- at the local Slipper Factory in Malone.
Emma also ran a "Rooming House" in their Malone home. In the front parlor was an upright piano, at which I'd practice for hours. Emma always had her cookie jar filled with store-bought cookies, offered with glasses of milk.
