**My Maternal Great-Grandfather** by James A. Dodd, Sr. (son of Louie T. Dodd buried at Sharp)

Father was Joab Cotten, early TX pioneer.Family owned land in Milam Cnty, including where Sharp,TX was established.

Montiville's wife was Elizabeth (Betty) Elliott Dodd Cotten buried next to him. Were parents of my Grandmother Estella Cotten Dodd, buried at their feet.

A note about Montiville's father JOAB COTTEN's life:
Speaking with my Daddy today about Family History...Joab Cotten was my GGG-Grandfather and the story was told that he was gone when the Military came through and his wife Pahaha Starr - a Cherokee Indian from Georgia (one of his wives) and their son were caught up in that Exodus and were never seen again. We believe they were in Northern Arkansas. He journeyed back and forth from Louisiana. He lived close to the Anderson Lively family in Arkansas. Found a thread today from another down line relative that Joab was the son of Pahaha Starr and Abraham Cotton. Hope to find out for certain one day. Joab settled in Milam County Texas in the 1850’s and he and son Montiville Cotten served in the Texas Home Guard From Milam County. Had to have some men to protect against Kiowa and Comanche raids deep into Texas. Daddy’s Mother and Father are from Milam County. #MilamCounty Found this thread out on the net: Pahaha Starr was my Cherokee gggrandmother. She married Abraham Cotton in GA around late 1700's after the war ended. Pahaha was first cousin to Sam Houston's wife Talahinia (Tiana Rogers.
One of their children was Joab Cotton, and descendants lived in Louisiana. We might be missing a piece of history - this was great to see.

From historic gathering of information given to my Daddy, James A. Dodd, Sr. here is that detail:

The Cotton's (Spelled Cotten on headstone and Cotton in writings)
Monterville Cotton and Elliott were the parents of our grandmother, Estella Cotton Dodd, who married our grandfather, James Ashley Dodd.
Mont Cotton's father was Joab Cotton...and family legend says he came from Ireland...but we think he was born in 1803 in Amite County, Kentucky.
Elizabeth "Betty" Elliott was born in 1849 and died July 4, 1905. Her first husband was William Henry Dodd who "was much older". Estella (Stella) was three months old when Betty married Mont Cotton. We don;'t know if William or Monterville was Stella's fahter, but she was raides by Mont and she considered him to be her father.
Monterville was a Church of Christ Minister and a large land owner. Worship services were often held in their home for the family owned the first piano ever seen in Milam County, Texas.
He was born April 22, 1834, in Arkansas, and died April 16, 1919. Both Mont and Betty Cotton are buried in Sharp Cemetery, Milam County.
