----------------------
The son of Michael & Elizabeth (Leppart) Minnich and stepson of Jane Ann (Olive) Minnick, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living with his prosperous family in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. C, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
2. Enlisted as a substitute and mustered into federal service May 10, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry. Where this happened is subject to debate. The company register and muster rolls claim all that happened in West Chester, Chester County, but the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file says Carlisle, which is more logical, if unconfirmed. Promoted to corporal to date July 20, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company August 28, 1865.

Sometime after 1870, he moved his family to Philadelphia where he worked as a marble worker. Originally buried in Philadelphia, during the 1920s all the cemetery's remains were re-interred at Broomall, Delaware County.

Typically, the spelling of his surname varies with the source.
"Minich": His individual pension index, the company descriptive lists for both regiments, Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers for both regiments, and the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses.
"Minnick": His organizational pension index, the 1880 and 1900 censuses, and the 1890 Veterans' Schedule.
"Minnich": Both regimental muster rolls, his death certificate, and obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
