Hoeft Services Saturday

Funeral services for the Rev. Martin Hoeft, O.F.M., pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church, Maydale, who died in St. Mary's hospital, Wednesday morning, will be held in St. Joseph's church, Olpe, Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock.

The Solemn Pontifical Funeral High Mass will be celebrated with Archbishop Edward J. Hunkeler, D.D. The Office of the Dead will be chanted at 10 o'clock. The body will be taken to St. Joseph's church in Olpe on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the casket will be open until the funeral time Saturday. Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock Friday evening at the church.

The casket will be open this evening from 7 to 9 o'clock, and Friday until 2 o'clock at the Eccleston & Son funeral home.

Although he held a number of appointments and worked zealously wherever he was, Father Hoeft felt most at home in Maydale where he First served from 1916 until 1926, and the second time since 1949. It was during his first years there that the church, school and homes for the priests and sisters were built. He wet to Maydale in 1949 from St. Mary's hospital, Emporia where he had served as chaplain from 1941 to 1949.

Father Martin was born in Peoria, Ill., May 8, 1883. He entered the Francisca Order August 15, 1903 and was ordained tot he Holy Priesthood on June 11, 1910. His First assignment was St. Thomas church, Kansas City, Kan. Besides his posts at Maydale and Emporia, he served Higginsville, Mo.;Minonk, Ill.; LaFayette, Ind.; Buras, La., St. Michaels, Ariz.

He went to Buras, La., as pastor of Our Lady of Good Harbor Parish in 1926. During his pastorate there from 1926 to 1939 he helped establish the Farm Bureau on the lower delta and was instrumental in erecting a large orange-packing plant at Buras. He built a church near the tip of the delta; built a residence and enlarged the church at Home Place, and built the combination building which houses the church, school and residence at Happy Jack, La.
