His grandfather had acquired 800 acres of farm land in White County but after passing to his heirs, almost all of it was out of the family. During his lifetime, Alexander purchased all 800 acres that his grandfather had owned but as with his grandfather's estate, most of the heirs either sold or lost the farms at the time of the Great Depression.

His second wife was Nancy Alice Jamerson (Taylor) and they were married February 20, 1884. Their children that grew to adults were Lura Garrison Absher, Lucy Garrison Questelle, Dillard Garrison, Alex Garrison, Joe Garrison and Roscoe Garrison.
