The home of Charley McConnell, living six miles east of the city was destroyed by fire last night between the hours of nine and ten and two persons Jimmie, the 11-year-old son of Mr. McConnell , and Oll Hathaway, an old soldier 76 years of age were burned to death. There were 10 people in the house at the time of the fire. Mr. and Mrs. McConnell, their seven children and an aged uncle. Mr. McConnell was awakened by his wife and saw the fire in the ceiling of the kitchen and like a flash it spread over the room and went up the stairway. He called for the family to get out as the house could not be saved. All on the first floor escaped. In the upper room were the two who were burned to death, the 16-year-old daughter and a small boy. The girl came downstairs and thinking of the boys and her uncle again ascended the stairs. She could not persuade the old man to get out and the eleven-year-old boy who was with him also remained but she did not know if he was awake sufficient to know the danger. The girl took the three-year-old little boy, who also slept upstairs in her arms and rushed to the stairway and in spite of the fact that the flames were shooting upward, she braved the flames, carrying the little boy with her. When she was a few feet from the bottom, the whole room a mass of flames, her father reached for her and pulled her through while she still held to the little boy. It was a brave act from the girl as she was afire from head to foot and the clothes were almost burned off before she could be stripped. The father tore off the burning clothes from the girl and boy and wrapped them in some bed clothing which had been removed and they were taken to the home of J.G. Graves for medical attention. It is doubtful if they will recover. The father and mother are grief-stricken over the affair and are unable to remember much about what happened. LATER: Stella the 16-year-old daughter died just after noon (November 6) from the effects of her burning while rescuing her little brother.
