The Rev. Eric D. Stroman, 82, of North, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at The Methodist Oaks after a long illness.

Funeral services will be celebrated at 6 p.m., Sunday, June 6, at North United Methodist Church with the Rev. Matt Rucker officiating, assisted by the Rev. Kermit Shrawder of the Methodist Oaks and the Rev. Gregg Jeffcoat of On This Rock Ministries. Burial will be in Pen Branch Cemetery with Masonic and military rites.

Active pallbearers will be Gregg Riser, Michael Coggin, Gary Justice, Dan Harley, Ray Collier, and John D. Flake. Honorary
pallbearers will be Jeff Holstein, James Bridges, Aubrey Gleaton, Doyle Carson, Wilton Robinson, Adrian Martin, Glenn Shumpert, Nelson Wingard, Thomas E. Hayden, Jewell J. Stroman, William A. Jones, Henry Livingston, Furman Derrick, Zack Livingston, John Camarda, Ralph Lovern and fellow ministers of the faith.

Rev. Stroman was born in Woodford, a son of the late Michael Paul Stroman Sr. and Lena M. Jones Stroman. He was a graduate of North High School and the Ministerial Course of Study of Emory University Theological School in Atlanta. He was a local pastor of the South Carolina Methodist Conference and served many churches in the Orangeburg District; Eutawville and Gerizim United Methodist Churches of Eutawville and Vance; Clinton UMC of Salley; St. John's and Trinity UMC of North; Wightman and Ebenezer UMC of Bowman; St. John's UMC of Rowesville; and Bethel UMC of Orangeburg, where he served the Lord faithfully for 35 years. He was a retired member of the South Carolina Methodist Conference.

Rev. Stroman also served in many civic areas. He served as the Mayor of Woodford for many years, and served on the North Town Council. He was also an S.C. Notary Public.

He was employed for 25 years with the Army-Air Force Exchange at Fort Jackson and took early retirement to serve full-time in the United Methodist Ministry. He was a master carpenter, and received recognition from the Army-Air Force for his outstanding work. He also spent many hours in his own workshop, Stroman's Crafts and Services, with the slogan "God and Man Working Together."

He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. While serving on the ammunition ship USS Storm King AP 171, he was seriously wounded in a Pacific invasion and spent many months in a Naval hospital for recuperation until his discharge in 1945. He was a member of the USS Storm King AP 171 reunion, which meets yearly. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion, the Paralyzed Veterans and America, and a Mason of North Lodge 119 for over 50 years.

Rev. Stroman and his family were honored in 1981 as the Family of the Year in Region Five of South Carolina. He was honored in 1994 as the Outstanding Older American of the Lower Savannah Region. In 1996 he was nominated as Father of the Year in South Carolina. He was very appreciative of these honors and always strived to live up to these ideals.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Michael Paul Stroman Jr.; three sisters, Dell Stroman Craig, Helen Stroman Barber, and Bessie Stroman Jeffcoat.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Rose Harley Stroman of the home; a son, Michael Eric Stroman and his wife, Faye, of Greenville; two daughters, Pamela S. Kemmerlin and her husband, Roger, of Eutawville, and Beverly Stroman Spires and her husband, Richard, of Santee; four grandchildren, Tanya S. Coggin and her husband, Michael, of Greer, Gregg W. Riser and his wife, Kena, of Bowman, Nichole F. Stroman and her fiance', Marty Ledford, both of Columbia, and Erica Lee Riser of Summerville; six great-grandchildren, Eric Samuel and Madison Elizabeth Coggin of Greer, Jada M. Stroman of Greenville, and Keagan Lee, Hannah Brook and Margaret Rose Riser of Bowman; his loving nurse companion, Mrs. Vernell Stroman Folk of Orangeburg.

Rev. Stroman was a loving father and grandfather, as well as an awesome man of God who served faithfully and lovingly in his call to ministry. He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and at other times at the home, 224 Walnut St., North.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Methodist Oaks for their loving service to Rev. Stroman.

Memorials may be made to North United Methodist Church and St. John's United Methodist Church of North; the Pen Branch Association; The Methodist Oaks; and any church where Rev. Stroman served as pastor.
