Hartley Coleman Hanes is son of Orlo Ray Haynes (1883–1937) and Mary Elizabeth "Helen" Coleman (1888–1972). He was the eldest of 6 children born to Orlo and Mary Elizabeth Hanes; his siblings:

- Thomas "Lorance" Hanes (1915–1965)
- James "Dermont" Hanes (1918–1993)
- Clark "Harlow" Hanes (1926–1986)
- Lena Lavina Hanes, Smith (1928–2008)
- Mary Margaret Hanes (1930–1931)

On 25 Nov 1936, Hartley married Gwendolyn A (Dutcher) Bowlby in Lansing, Ingham, Michigan, USA. At the time of their marriage Gwen had one son, Robert Sheldon Bowlby (father Elmer Guy Bowlby), who was age three at the time and whom it appears Hartley adopted. Hartley and Gwen's family:

Hartley and Gwen divorced about 1967, and about 1968, he married his sister-in-law (widow of Thomas Lorance), Maryella (Benjamin) Hanes. They lived on West Barnes Road, in Aurelius Township, Mason, MI; later removing to Cedarwoods in Mason where they both resided at the time of their deaths.
