Biography of William Ezra EMMERSON [in progress].

William Ezra EMMERSON (or EMERSON) was born 16 March 1822, just southwest of Carmi, in White County, Illinois. He married Mary Ann PYLE on 18 Feb 1845, and she would bear him 3 sons and 3 daughters, and then died---probably of fever---about a month after William went off to war. William was a farmer, and patented 41.93 acres as a U.S. Federal Land Grant on 1 July 1851 (Certificate #13607). This was located in White County, the S/E quarter of the N/E Quarter of Section 4, of Township 6 South, Range 9 East of the 3rd Principal Meridian. This land sits about 1-1/4 mile south of the meeting house and cemetery of Zion Baptist Church (now Old Kingdom), and touches the land of William Ezra's father William EMMERSON to the northeast, and of Mary Ann's father Nicholas PYLE to the south. After serving in the Civil War in the 87th Illinois Infantry, and losing his first wife in death, William Ezra EMMERSON remarried to Louisa Caledonia HART on 20 May 1865, and she would bear William 2 more daughters and 1 more son. William died on 21 April 1868, on his farm southwest of Carmi.

William Ezra EMMERSON's Family Background:

William Ezra EMMERSON was the son of William EMMERSON, Esq., and Elizabeth _______. Previous research had assumed the surname AARON for Elizabeth's maiden name, but that Elizabeth AARON/ARON and the William EMMERSON she married in 1816 in Pittsylvania County, VA, lived the rest of their lives in that County and State. That William EMMERSON of Pittsylvania Co., VA, seems to be a 2nd-cousin of our William EMMERSON, Esq., father of William Ezra EMMERSON.

More research is needed to find the maiden name of William E. EMMERSON's mother Elizabeth. Various suggestions for her surname include COSBY, CATES, GHOLSON, and WHITE. The COSBY name is legitimately found in a timely marriage record, but apparently for a different couple, distantly related to our branch: this was a marriage between one William EMMERSON and Elizabeth COSBY, occurring in 1802 in Albemarle Co., VA. The CATES and GHOLSON names are specifically linked to our White County, Illinois family, but no proofs are given anywhere, only vague marriage dates for William and Elizabeth, such as "about 1806" in "Tennessee", with either maiden name connected.

WHITE might instead be the surname of old William's mother instead of his wife; one of the WHITE families lived very close to the EMMERSONS in White County, so that could be a lead; they may even be connected to the namesake of White County.

They would have been married probably in 1805 or earlier, and probably in KY or Middle TN, though the location and record has not been found. Their children born before 1818 seem to have been born in Middle Tennessee, but so far, the exact County has not yet been discovered. Some of heir children have later connections to Giles County, Warren, and Henry Counties, though Henry is West of the Tennessee River, and therefore wasn't created until after the Chickasaw Purchase in 1818.

Old William and Elizabeth EMMERSON were born in VA just after the Revolutionary War, according to the 1850 White Co., IL, Census. William's stated age in the 1850 Census puts him as born in 1782. His birth place seems to be in Caroline Co., VA, if he is indeed one of the sons of Reuben EMMERSON, (1747-1834), a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia, and from the larger EMMERSON/EMERSON clan of Middlesex, Caroline, and Spotsylvania Counties in VA. Reuben's wife was also said to be an Elizabeth, maiden name may be CROUCHER, or WHITE. Reuben was pensioned in 1832, and his statements in his application provide a little bit of biographical data, but not as much as one would like. Reuben and his family moved to Fayette County, KY, in 1786, and he died there in 1834.

Reuben's son William EMMERSON moved to Tennessee before his oldest son Henry was born in 1806, and lived there until sometime between his daughter Polly's birth in 1815 in TN and 13 March 1819, when he first bought land in White County, IL. He has so far not been found on any reconstructed Census records for 1810 Tennessee, or 1810 anywhere. It is also possible that during the 1810 era, William was living in the border area between Tennessee and Kentucky, which territory was in such dispute that many residents weren't sure which state they lived in for several years.

William EMMERSON served as a Justice of the Peace in White County from 1828-29, and was from henceforth known as "William EMMERSON, Esq.", or "Squire", or "Judge EMMERSON." His second son Reuben EMMERSON was much more involved in local politics and the bench, and also became known as "Judge EMMERSON", probably more famously and for much longer.

----------
William Ezra EMMERSON's marriages and family:
First, there is a proof of William Ezra's middle name Ezra. In most every other document pertaining to him, there is only a middle initial "E." But our family had him as the source of his grandson Henry Ezra HART's middle name, which was passed to his son Clarence Ezra HART (this author's Grampa). Proof of this is found in the purchase William E. EMMERSON made on 1 July 1851 in White County, from the Federal Land Office in Shawneetown, IL; entered 41.93 acres, being the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 4, Township 6 South, Range 9 East, of the 3rd Principle Meridian (SEq-NEq Sec. 4, T6S-R9E). The certificate (#13607) is made out to "William Ezra Emerson", and the full name is replete throughout the document a total of 5 times. This land is about 1-1/4 miles south of Old Kingdom [Zion] Baptist Church & Cemetery, just a few miles SW of Carmi, in White Co., IL.

Second, the spelling of the name EMMERSON: should it be with one "M" or two? The answer it that the family itself seemed to be somewhat indifferent to the matter, from all that can be discerned in the records. This author's Great-Grampa Rev. Henry Ezra HART (1877-1965), son of Rev. Martin Marshall HART and Martha EMMERSON, typically used two "MM"s when writing of his mother her family, including her brother, Uncle Allen EMMERSON, a Baptist preacher as well, missionary to the Spokane area in Eastern Washington state beginning in the 1880's. But the "MM" spelling was never thought to be a decisive mark of one branch of the family over another, nor does it seem to indicate a Germanic origin over an English one, or similar issue. It just seemed to be arbitrarily determined by how many loops of the pen one made while scribbling out the name on any given occasion. It can be proven that this branch seemed to spell their own names with double letters, but just as often allowed the tombstone makers to get away with only one "M". So be it.

William E. was married first to Mary Ann PYLE, daughter of Nicholas PYLE and Peggy Ann WISHON. They were married on 20 Feb 1845 in White Co., IL. They had six children together: Allen, Martha, Margaret, Lou Dica, Amos, and John Ezra EMMERSON.

Corporal William Ezra EMMERSON's military headstone is somehow mistakenly marking the grave of his nephew Pvt. William Harrison EMERSON, in nearby West Union Cem. Corporal Wm. E. EMERSON's stone reads thus:

CORPL.
WM. E. EMERSON
CO. I.
87 ILL. INF.
