Nancy was one of two daughters born to John Wright (abt 1800-1845) and Jane M. Thompson Wright. Nancy's mother died when she was still underage. Her father then left South Carolina and headed for Western Tennessee along with both of his daughters and his wife's sister, Malinda Ann Thompson (1804-1841). Malinda met and married Banyan Payne in June, 1835. Nancy and her sister Cynthia moved in with the Paynes at this time. When her aunt Malinda became ill after the birth of her second child in 1839, Nancy and Cynthia took over the womanly household chores, including being nannies for the children and nurse for their aunt. In September, 1841 following Malinda's death in January, Nancy married Banyan Payne and became the step-mother to his two children with Malinda and eventually the mother of nine of her own children. Nancy was reared in a staunchly Presbyterian home, and reared her family in the faith. Nancy and Banyan Payne were fairly well off, as Banyan was a shrewd businessman and landowner in Tipton County. Following the death of her husband in 1878, Nancy and her youngest daughter, Olie, moved to the home of another daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and James Fentress Dickson. When Nancy died, her physician in attendance was her grandson, Dr. Vernon Banyan Dickson.
