According to parish records in Norway, Rev. H. J. Berg was born with the name Hans Kristian Berg, son of Johan Kristian Olsen and Serianna Andersdatter. He emigrated to America in 1888. He received theological training at Red Wing, serving churches in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, MI.

Hans married Juline Sether 16 Jun 1898. Six months later, on 15 Jan 1899, Hans preached his first sermon at Ostrander where he served three churches: Bethlehem, Bethany and Ostrander Lutheran churches, but they lived in Ostrander the rest of their lives.

In 1911 the couple adopted Ethel (who married Elvin S. Tollefson) and raised her as their daughter. Rev. berg had been ill for several weeks before his death. Many hundreds of people mourned his passing.
