Captain and owner of five famous showboats, all named French's New Sensation, that toured American rivers and waterways for half a century. He built his first showboat in 1878 and his last was constructed in 1901, a year before his death. He is credited with being a master showman and one of the most successful showboat managers in the history of his field.

On June 18, 1878, he married Callie Leach in Fayette County, Ohio, and the pair began a career in traveling theatre. His wife also gained her riverboat pilot's license and was noted as one of the first female pilots to captain boats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in that day.
