Pleas was the son of Nathan "Nate" and Elizabeth Hughes Burchfield. He died in the Knoxville General Hospital at the age of 26 from pneumonia while hospitalized for a gunshot wound in the spinal lumbar region. He was not married. He had been hospitalized since October 10th of that year.

Although his death certificate states he was to be buried in Riverside Station, he is actually buried here.
