William was the son of Lydia Elzina (Knox) and David Allen Brown. He was the grandson of Almira (Perkins) & Ada Knox and Nancy (Meek) & William McKindry Brown.
He was born in Mercer County; either near Keithsburg or Millersburg. His siblings included; Nancy Rosetta, Daniel Perkins, Mina, Clem A, David Glenn, Asa Cleveland, Lewis R, Minnie, Earl, Lilly Fern and True Clinton Brown.
He was first married to Mary (maiden name unknown). She was born in either Germany or Canada abt 1875. According to her 1900 census record she was Canadian/Dutch and migrated to the USA in 1890 at the age of 15.
They were married about 1899 in Mercer County, Illinois. 1900 Census taken June 9th lists them as Family #67 living in Abinfton Township (Keithsburg) Mercer County, IL: Will Brown age 23, Head, married one year, born Illinois, occupation Farm Laborer; wife Mary Brown age 25, mother of 0 children/0 children living; parents born Germany, number of years in the US - 10.
Following the 1900 census two sons were born to William and Mary; William Jennings b. 1901 and Irvin b. 1904. Sadly tho, Mary died sometime after the birth of Irvin and before the 1910 census, which was taken on the 23rd of May, as William is listed as widowed and he and their two young sons are living with his parents and siblings.
