Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 7, 1913 in Wallowa to Ernest F. and Myrtle Powell Johnson. He grew up on the family ranch in Lower Valley as the next-to-youngest of nine children. He graduated from Wallowa High School in 1932 and attended Oregon State University for two terms.
He married Muriel Strite in 1939. They lived in Wallowa where he and his brother Clifford owned and operated the Wallowa Grain Growers.
