Howard Myron Johnson of Wallowa died April 24, 2006, at the Wallowa Valley Care Center. He was 92.

Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 7, 1913 in Wallowa to Ernest F. and Myrtle Powell Johnson. He grew up on the family ranch in Lower Valley as the next-to-youngest of nine children. He graduated from Wallowa High School in 1932 and attended Oregon State University for two terms.

He married Muriel Strite in 1939. They lived in Wallowa where he and his brother Clifford owned and operated the Wallowa Grain Growers. Later he took over the family ranch where he raised Hereford cattle. He and his wife retired from the cattle business in 1979 and developed the HMJS tree farm on their Smith Mountain rangeland. Mr. Johnson gained great satisfaction from working on and maintaining the tree farm.

During his lifetime, he was active in many school, civic and professional organizations including the Wallowa School Board, the Wallowa County Stockgrowers Association, the Federal Land Bank, Sustainable Northwest and Wallowa Memorial Hospital. He had been honored as Cattleman, Grassman and Tree Farmer of the Year for Wallowa County and received the Outstanding Western Tree Farmer of the Year award in 1987.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife Muriel; brother and sister-in-law Reid and Marilyn Johnson of Wallowa; daughter and son-in-law JoAnne and Craig Pubols of McMinnville; granddaughter Jennifer and husband Jesse Brandeburg of Portland; grandson Steven Howard Pubols of Corvallis and great granddaughter Lucy Claire Brandeburg; as well as many nieces and nephews.
