Elizabeth Houghtaling (aka Hoogteeling) was a descendant of the original Dutch colonists that founded New Amerstdam/ New York. She was born in the Dutch-founded town of Hurley, NY. Her father was Jeremiah Houghtaling and her mother was Maria Marytje Roosa. Her siblings included Elsje (b.1788), Egbert (b.1794 d.1870), Maria (b.1799), and Annie (b.1802).
Elizabeth married Cornelius Dubois in Ulster County, NY on 18 Jan 1821 and they had several children including: Gertrude Maria Dubois Johnson(b.1823), Charlotte Dubois Johnson (b.1828), Elvina Dubois Johnson (b.1830 d.1894), Jeremiah Dubois (b.1832 d.1909), John Dubois (b.1838 d.1882), Ann (b.1845). Note that three of her daughters married three Johnson men while both the Dubois family and the Johnson family were living and working at the canal project in Lackawaxen, PA in the 1840's. As a group, the Johnsons and Dubois families moved to pioneer the newly opened Wisconsin area about 1854. We find them all in Jefferson County, WI in the 1855 Wisconsin State Census. By 1860, Elizabeth and her husband, Cornelius, had moved to Juneau County, WI where they lived beside their sons Jeremiah and John until Elizabeth's death in 1875. The historical records say that she died in this vicinity of Mauston, Juneau County, WI but it is not certain that she was buried in this cemetery.
