Arla B."Snooks" Bettinger, age 69, of Sugar Camp, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Eagle River Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born September 3, 1937 in Rhinelander, the daughter of Joseph G. and Arla R. (Bingham) Calbat. She attended Rhinelander schools and was an avid softball player. Arla grew up in a family of eight children and enjoyed singing with her siblings. She married Earl Bettinger on April 30, 1960 in Rhinelander. Arla enjoyed dancing, especially the jitterbug.

During her life, she waited tables at Bernie's Waffle Shop, tended bar at Pat's Tavern , and helped with the hot lunch program at South Park School. Arla was a very giving person, donating her time at the hospital gift shop and as a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary. In her spare time, she could be found playing scratch-off tickets and video gaming machines. Most of all, she treasured her time spent with her granddaughter, Misti B., of whom she was so proud.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Bettinger (David) Gaber, her beloved granddaughter, Misti Gaber, Rhinelander, three sisters; Carol Bowman, and Eva (Ralph) Priebe, Rhinelander, and Mary Peterson, Waupaca, her brother-in-law, Leroy (Kay) Bettinger, Tacoma, WA., and two sisters-in-law, Kay Calbat, Milwaukee, and Lavelle Calbat, Waller, TX., a special friend, Ron Meyers, and dog, Cody,her close family friend, Joanne Durchschlag, many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl "Hound Dog" on September 17, 1997, and four brothers; Joseph "Jay, Allan, Clare, and Jack Calbat.

Funeral services will be held at the Hildebrand-Russ Funeral Home, 365-4343, on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating. Interment will follow in Northland Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 P.M. Friday evening, when a VFW Auxiliary service will be conducted. Visitation continues one hour prior to services on Saturday morning. A memorial has been established in her name.
