hillip Lee "Phil" McCully, a Grays Harbor resident of over 80 years, passed-away at his home in McCleary, Thursday, December 15, 2011. He was 91. Phil was born July 15, 1920 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Phillip and Loleta (Simpson) McCully. Phil moved with his family to Grays Harbor at a young age. Phil attended school in Oklahoma and in Washington and is a graduate of Raymond High School's class of 1940. After high school, Phil served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations with Fleet Marine Force. Phil is a Pearl Harbor survivor and served until his honorable discharge at the rank of Technical Sergeant in 1947 having served over 6 years of active service. After Phil's military service he went to work at Simpson Timber Company where he worked for 36 years until his retirement in August of 1983. He always said he only worked for two uncles: Uncle Sam and Uncle Simpson. Phil married Emogene Bartlett in McCleary on August 24, 1943. She preceded him in death on February 16, 2007. Throughout his life, Phil was involved in many personal and civic activities. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, Lions, Oaksridge Golf Club, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Marine Corps Detachment to the USS Enterprise and the McCleary United Methodist Church. He was very active in serving his community. He served on the McCleary City Council, the Mark Reed Hospital Board, and the McCleary School Board.. Phil also enjoyed being involved with the McCleary Bear Festival from as far back as when it was called the Days of 49. He enjoyed cooking bear stew for the festival and was the Grand Marshal in 2011. . According to his family, Phil was an amazing man who truly enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.. He was a loving, caring, strong, generous, hardworking, man with a great sense of humor who was respected by many. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by sons; Phillip "Mac" McCully Jr., Elma, and Steve McCully, McCleary, and daughters; Sharla (Tony) Mauhar, Tumwater, Laurie McCully, Vista, California and Shelley (Tom) Little of Shelton. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Emogene, he is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 4 sisters and son-in-law Aubrey Metheny in 1997. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Harbors Home Health & Hospice, 201 7th St. Hoquiam, WA 98550 or to the McCleary United Methodist Church PO Box 588 McCleary, WA 98557. Public visitation will be held 4-6 PM Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma. Funeral services will begin at 11AM Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma. Graveside committal services with military honors will be at McCleary Cemetery followed by a potluck reception at the McCleary VFW.
