Mr. Fletcher was born in Hollywood, CA on November 29, 1930; the son of Charles K. Fletcher and Jeannette Toberman Fletcher. In his early days, Pete enjoyed sailing, including a sail from Tahiti to Hawaii. In 1951 he participated in the 2225 mile Transpacific Yacht Race as a crew member on board the Dragoon, winning third place in the class A division. He graduated from Pt. Loma High School, class of 1949, and later Stanford University, class of 1953 with a major in Anthropology. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army between 1954 and 1956, stationed in occupied Germany with the U.S. Army Security Agency.
After making his start in the banking industry at Home Federal Savings and Loan, Pete embarked on a career in real estate development. In the 1950's and 1960's he developed the original Del Mar Plaza and many varied commercial and residential projects. In 1969 he was appointed to the California Fish & Game Commission by then Governor Ronald Regan where he served until 1975, with a term as President of the Commission in 1973. Pete later developed and built Flower Hill Mall in Del Mar in 1977 and Rancho Santa Fe Plaza (formerly known as West Village Center) in 1987. Pete loved to hunt, fish and travel, often piloting his own Cessna.
Pete is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Georg' Ann Fletcher, son, Peter T. Fletcher, Jr., daughters, Christy Fletcher Biddick, Anne Fletcher and Holly Fletcher Wicklund and grandchildren Alexander, Maximilian, and Morgan Wicklund, and his Labrador Retriever, Wiley.
Services are pending. In lieu of of flowers, donations are suggested in Pete's name to the San Diego Zoo, 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego, CA 92101.
