Newton Woman Was Oldest Soldier in Local Salvation Army Corps

Mrs. Henrietta M. Goforth, 87, oldest soldier in the Newton Salvation Army Corps, died Thursday at 2 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.E. Montgomery, 313 East Fourth Street North, following a long illness.

Mrs. Goforth, resident of Newton for 30 years, had been ill with pneumonia and complications since Feb 6.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Murdoch funeral home, with the Rev. George Watt of the Newton Salvation Army post.

Henrietta M. Calkins was born in Indiana March 8, 1943, and was united in marriage to Andrew Jackson Goforth, Dec. 10, 1860. Five daughters and two sons were born to this union.

Army Worker

Mrs. Goforth was united with the Baptist church at the age of 18 years, but for the last 18 years had been affiliated with the Salvation Army.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs Montgomery of Newton, Mrs Effie Mummey of Milan, Mo., and Mrs. Sarah Haley of Montaque, Calif., two sons, Frank of Newton and Forest of Santa Monica, Calif., and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
