Civil War: Company I, 7th California Infantry

James A. Cooper was born in Pennsylvania about 1835. He later headed west to California where he worked as a miner at Nevada City in Nevada County, California. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years on November 12, 1864. He was mustered into Company I, 7th California Infantry, November 17. Private Cooper was posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco March 31, 1866 (Orton, 790). After the war he returned to Nevada City and later relocated to Virginia City, Nevada, where he married the widow Mrs. William Clark* about 1868. In June 1870 James was living at Virginia City with Sarah and his three step-children and working as a tinner (1870 U.S. Census). James died just a few months later on November 7, 1870, and was buried in the Silver Terrace Cemetery by his Phil Kearny Post, No. 8, Grand Army of the Republic, comrades on November 10.

* Sarah Jane Ward arrived at New York City aboard the Sheridan on August 23, 1848, a 13-year-old orphan and famine refugee. She married [1] William Clark (1827, Ireland - btwn 1861-67) in New York City about 1852. After his death she married [2] James Cooper.

Nevada, Virginia City, November 10th. Two military funerals took place in the city today. The first was that of Lieutenant P. Hennessey of the Emmett Guard, who was burned to death by the fire in the Boston House yesterday morning; and the second, that of James Cooper, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
