Services For Former Local Resident Are Held Sunday

Funeral services for Thomas S. Mapes, 83, a native of St. Joseph vicinity, were held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Jeanes funeral home here, followed by interment in the Patterson cemetery, south of town.
A short service had been held at the home in Newtown, Ind., at 10:30 Sunday morning, with the Rev. Mr. Frye of Attica, Ind., in charge of both services. Music was furnished by recordings of "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Grandsons of the deceased served as pall bearers and granddaughters were in charge of the flowers.
Mr. Mapes died at the home of his son, Earl, at 4:30 a.m. Friday, December 3, he was born January 20, 1860 near St. Joseph, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth S. Mapes. He farmed in the Sidney and Paris area until he moved to Newtown, Ind., about forty years ago. On October 26, 1879, he was united in marriage to Jane McElwee, who preceded him in death eight years ago.
He is survived by four children: namely, Earl, at Newtown, Ind., Leonard at Covington, Ind., Harvey, at Hillsboro, Ind., and Mrs. Elizabeth White, of Covington, Ind.; eighteen grandchildren, and thirty-nine great grandchildren.
