He was born September 28, 1921 in Olive Hill, Kentucky to Thomas E. and Stella M. (Brammer) Callihan. He married Emma Maxine Leino from Roubaix, South Dakota on April 22, 1944 in Butte, Montana. Dan and Emma had three children Daniel Lyle, Gary Delmar, and Karla Maxine.
Dan was a veteran of WWII serving in the European theater until the war ended. Following the war, Dan and Emma settled in Lead, South Dakota where they raised their family. He was employed by Black Hills Corporation and was a small business owner specializing in auto repair. They moved to Spearfish, South Dakota in 1986, and he retired shortly thereafter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Emma Callahan, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
He is survived by his children: Daniel (BJ), Windsor, Colorado; Gary (Jeanne), Rapid City, South Dakota; and Karla (Darrel Mank), Campbell, California; five grandchildren: Lesley R. (Steve) Switzer, Plymouth, NH; Dr. Sidney L. Callahan, Greensboro, NC; Clint (Monique) Callahan, San Jose, CA; Keli (Jeffery Erickson) Callahan, Colorado Springs, CO; and Zachary Mank, Campbell, CA; along with six great grandchildren.
He was remarried to Betty Wilson in 2002 and later divorced.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Fellowship, celebration of Dan's life, and a light lunch will follow services at the Church.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard.
