The former Bertha Zastrow was born on March 22, 1879 in Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Zastrow. She was married on January 5, 1895 in the Town of Pine River to Gustav Karau. He died on October 20, 1943. The couple farmed in the Town of Pine River.
Mrs. Karau moved to Merrill in 1947. She was a member of St. Stephen's Ladies Aid.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Esther Buck, Mrs. Evelyn Fruend, and Mrs. Delaine Hiller, all of Merrill; Mrs. Jack Sturman of Kalamazoo, MI and Mrs. Lorraine Luedtke of Ravenna, Ohio; one brother, Emil Zastrow of Merrill, along with 16 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 8, 1974 at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ. The Rev. Dale Kuck officiated and burial was in Merrill Memorial Park.
