IRELLE HERNDON ELLIOTT

Irelle Herndon Elliott of Haleburg passed away on Thursday night, April 1, 2010, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville. She was 88. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 3, 2010, in the Haleburg Baptist Church with Rev. Coley M. Holloway and Rev. Matthew Quincey officiating. Burial will follow in the Haleburg Cemetery. Holman-Head-land Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Haleburg Baptist Church or the Haleburg Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, both c/o Sarah Pitchford, 3108 County Road 112, Columbia, AL 36319. Mrs. Elliott was born March 7, 1922 in the Tumbleton community of Henry County, the daughter of the late Willie Albert Herndon and Irene Herring Herndon. She had lived in Haleburg since March 18, 1939 when she married Harnage Elliott. They had celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary when he passed away, February 21, 2003. Mrs. Elliott took great pride in being a homemaker. She never worked away from her home and was proud to be able to make that statement. Mrs. Elliott worked for her husband in the operation of their family farm. She was an active member of the Haleburg Baptist Church where she worked with the children of the church beginning with the nursery and going through the intermediate age groups. Mrs. Elliott was active in the Women's Missionary Union and served as its Director and also as church clerk for a number of years. She was a member of the church choir until recent years. Mrs. Elliott was preceded in death by her husband, Harnage Elliott, an infant son, sister, Hariet Herndon Sinquefield and 3 brothers, John Boone Herndon, Albert Herndon and Myer Herndon; 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth Herndon and Gladys Herndon. Surviving relatives include a son, Harnage Herndon Elliott and wife, Robin Elliott, Haleburg; 2 grandchildren, Haley Bond and Heather Bond Freeman and husband, Chris Freeman; sisters-in-law, Edis Elliott Yance, Gwen Davis Elliott and Patsy Elliott; a brother-in-law, Christie Joe Elliott and wife, Jane Elliott; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Barbara Herndon Lindsey; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Serving as active pall-bearers will be Harold Snead, Hannon Hall, Jr., Bobby Sumlar, David Herndon, Bruce Bedsole, Heath Mims and Chris Freeman. Holman-Headland Mortuary, is in charge of arrangements.
