Kareen Bartley "Kay" (Miller) (Thuney) (Kapus) Marlin was born on July 16, 1934 in Charlo, Lake County, Montana, the eldest daughter and 2nd child of Barton Ura "Bart" Miller (1905–1984) and his 1st wife Dorothy Mae (Coulter) (Miller) (Stevens) Willett (1916–1982).
At the age of 12 her parents divorced and six children were put up for adoption. Unfortunately only the youngest 4 were adopted by three different families, and the child care agent who arranged the adoptions kept Kay.
Two years later, at the age of 14, Kay was married 1st on March 27, 1948 in Tacoma, Washington as the 1st of 4 wives of Vernon Meloy "Vern" Thuney (1931–2003) and for much of their marriage they lived in Bemidji, Minnesota. They divorced about 1956, probably in Flathead County, Montana.
After their divorce, she and the children moved to Ketchikan, Alaska where Kay had relatives, and Kay became a long-distance telephone operator. She met and Richard Lloyd Kapus (1930–2010), and they were married on March 26, 1961. They were divorced probably in the late 1970s and for a time Kay was living in Chula Vista, San Diego County, California, before moving to Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona.
