Born on November 19, 1927 in Jacksonville, Illinois, Betty was the daughter of Louis Frederic and Gladys Irene Hayes Freitag. She married Paul Arthur Abel on August 30, 1947 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Burlington, Iowa. He died on May 12, 1997.
Betty graduated from Burlington High School in 1945. She was a homemaker and worked at J. S. Schramm Co. for seven years.
She was a member of Good Friends of the Library, Des Moines County Historical Society, St. Patrick's Pinochle Club, Altar and Rosary Society, Great River Friends, Burlington Art Guild and SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church.
Betty enjoyed playing cards, traveling, crossword puzzles, following sports, and spending time with her family. She was an avid reader.
She is survived by three daughters , Kathy (James) Baker of Wheaton, Illinois, Maureen (Larry) Heath of Burlington, Iowa, and Colleen (Randal) Scholer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Douglas (Alexandra Burrus) Abel of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Kevin (Carol Ponciroli) Abel of St. Louis, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Anne) Baker, Andrea (Adam) Redd, Natalie Johnson, Taylor Heath, Michelle Heath, Melanie Heath, Kristen Scholer, Jonathan Scholer and Quinton Scholer; two great-grandchildren, Kaylie Redd and Ryan Redd; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers, Warren E. Freitag and Louis Freitag.
