Both his parents were killed in an auto rollover in Nephi Canyon. He survived the accident; he was 5-months old. He was raised by his grandparents, the Gowers. After attending BYU for 2 years, he was killed in an airplane crash while training in the army. He had been married to his wife, Loi Beth Kerr, for less than one year.

First Lieutenant Gowers was killed while piloting Curtiss P-40E Warhawk #41-24941 when he crashed on takeoff at Stockton Army Airfield, California.
