A viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 31, at Accent Funeral Home in Meridian from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will occur with a graveside service at Joplin Cemetery at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 1, followed by a memorial service at 11:30 AM at Meridian United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. The Reverends John Mars and Ralph Lawrence will officiate.
Janie was born in Meridian on January 27, 1924, the second daughter of Ray and Deane Ulmer. With the exception of a few months living in Boise, she lived her entire life within five miles of the little house in which she was born. During World War II, she worked the reception desk at the Visiting Officer's Quarters at Gowen Field.
Following the war, she worked for the American Red Cross at the Veteran's Administration campus in Boise. While at the Red Cross, her office was on the mail route of a young VA messenger; a courtship ensued, and she married Frank Smith on September 7, 1947, in Boise.
They purchased an acreage at the corner of Eagle and McMillan roads, where they raised three children. She was active in the PTA, and helped supervise the irrigation district and general elections. She was also a Girl Scout leader, a Red Cross blood drive volunteer, and herself donated over four gallons of blood over the years.
Frank passed away in March, 2003.
She was a 67 year member and past Matron of Meridian Chapter #66, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Meridian Methodist Church. She was also a majority member and past Bethel Guardian of Bethel 6, Job's Daughters.
Janie will always be remembered for her stoic determination and legendary thrift. Once she was married, it was her duty to make the paycheck stretch, and she knew every trick in the book. She could somehow get another week's worth of toothpaste out of a tube that others would discard.
Survivors include her sister, Joyce Knowles, of Boise; two daughters, Sheri (Rodger) Hood, Payette, and Vicki (Arlan) Potts, Boise; a son, Col. (ret) Mark (Debby) Smith, Boise; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Grace Assisted Living in Meridian for the wonderful and caring attention she received for the last five years. She so enjoyed the activities that they provided, and the friendships she made there. Also, a special thanks to the staff of St. Luke's Hospital, Meridian, telemetry unit for their compassionate care in her final days.
Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Meridian Methodist Church Memorial Fund, or to your favorite charity.
