Officer Whitelock was a 1969 graduate of the Burlington County Police Academy, and a seven year veteran of the Riverton, New Jersey Police Force. On January 14, 1976, just after he got off duty, he responded to a call that a "naked man was trying to mutilate himself". He arrived at the house on Lippincott Avenue in Riverton, and requested back up. Off-duty Palmyra Patrolman Howard Norcross arrived, and they found 25-year old former mental patient and convict Michael Logan naked, covered in blood, and wielding a knife. They chased him down a back fire escape, catching him in the yard. When Officer Whitelock attempted to handcuff the suspect, Logan managed to grab his service revolver, and shot Officer Norcross once in the chest. Officer Whitelock then dove on the wounded officer, shielding him as Logan shot again, killing him. Officer Norcross then emptied his revolver into Logan, killing him. Officer Whitelock had a wife and two children at the time of his death. Over 1,000 police officers from every county in New Jersey, and locales in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and Virginia attended his memorial service and funeral. His remains were transferred from the Funeral Home to the cemetery in a procession with full police honors involving over 200 police vehicles.

I was 6 years old and a resident of Riverton at the time of Officer Whitelock's death. I remember him as being very helpful in several neighborhood incidents, as well as being a friendly face to the neighborhood children. His death was a great shock to that small community, where he was an integral part.

You are remembered, Officer Whitelock.
