According to the sheriff's office. Halverson and his brother, John, 55, also of Linden, were hunting about 6:30 a.m. Thursday in a marshy area along Iowa County Highway A, about a mile west of County Highway J, in the Town of Mifflin. Linden is about 10 miles southwest of Dodgeville. Iowa County Coroner Tim Correll said Friday that John Halverson saw what he thought was a deer and fired, striking his brother, who was about 520 feet away. "It appears to be accidental," Correll said. "They lived together since Doral's wife died a year ago, perhaps even longer," Correll said. "They were apparently friendly, and hunting and fishing companions. "It appears to be accidental. I haven't talked to the district attorney yet, but that's what my impression is."
Experienced Hunters Alice Faull, of Faull Grocery Store in Linden, said the Halverson brothers stopped by occasionally for groceries, but she didn't know much about the two men who lived together on a farm outside of the small community. "They've been hunting for years and years," she said. "Just one of those things, I guess. Lot of times, it's the first time out. But they've been hunting for years." They would stop occasionally for gas at Larry's Texaco service station. Owner Larry Schultz said that Doral Halverson had been retired, while John worked for a construction company in Dodgeville. "They were big hunters, I know that," Schultz said. "Hunt, fish, trap, all that stuff."
