Dudley Gill, New Jersey Yachtsman
August 21, 1989|By Kathy Brennan, Daily News Staff Writer
Dudley W. Gill, an electronics specialist who spent most of the last 17 years of his life yachting back and forth from New Jersey to the Caribbean, died Saturday. The Philadelphia-born Gill was 79.
"Our life together was one long honeymoon, traveling on that boat," said his wife, Trummell. "We would leave in September from New Jersey and sail down the coast of Florida. Our boat was our hotel."
Gill was born in a South Philadelphia row house. Although his widowed mother had to scrimp to support Gill and his sister, Doris, both graduated from college. Gill received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Howard University and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
He worked as a project director and systems engineer for more than 30 years for the federal government at Fort Monmouth, N.J.
An active, curious man, Gill was a flying instructor who taught navigation to pilots and who discovered his passion for sailing in the early 1950s. He became one of the founding members of the Fort Monmouth Yacht Club.
His daughter, Patricia Hampton, remembered her father as a slim, intense man who always looked worried.
"He always looked serious. He always had heavy things on his mind," she said. "I think that he was concerned about a lot of things. He was concerned about youth and their lack of guidance and the fact that so many people did not value education."
After his retirement in 1972, Gill remained active in a number of civic and charitable organizations and served on the school board in Belmar, N.J.
He was an active member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, N.J., where he was chairman of the building committee and vestryman. Gill, whose last residence was Satellite, Fla., recently attended St. David's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
He was a Mason, Prince Hall affiliation, and a member of Phi Beta fraternity and the Monmouth County Business and Professional Men's Club.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by two sons, Dudley Jr. and Gregory; one sister, Doris Flagg; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 at St. Augustine's Episcopalian Church, Prospect and Atlantic avenues, Asbury Park, N.J. The family would like contributions to be made in his memory to St. Augustine's. His cremains were buried at St David's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cocoa Beach, Fla at a later service.
