His parents were Joshua Bigham and Dorothy Rutherford. His father was one of three brothers who came from Great Britain. He was a master mechanic and built the first steel bridge over the Flint River. His mother, Dorothy, was the daughter of John Rutherford who was born in SC in 1760 and is buried next to his first wife Mary "Polly" Hubert near Sandersville. Her father fought in the Revolutionary War. Joshua and Dorothy had children John, Judge Benjamin Henry Bigham buried in Hillview Cemetery in Troup Co, GA, Howell who died in early manhood, Reverend Robert William Bigham also buried in Hillview Cemetery, Margaret Eugenia, Georgia who married John Williams and moved to SC, and Adelaide who died young. Adelaide was one of the first women to receive her diploma from LaGrange Female College.
