Helen was a teacher in a one room school house for 4 years before marrying John Feb 27, 1926. She taught 2 years at the Dan Jones school out in the country around Pawnee, IL and boarded with the the Underwood family. (1922-1924)Helen would recall Mrs Underwood saying that she didn't have anything for Helen's lunch that day and Mr Underwood would go out and shoot a squirrel. She then taught at the Hazel Dell school for two years from 1924-1926 and boarded with the Ernie Neuman family. It was on her walks back and forth to school that she met John.

My memories of Grandma were her great love of reading which she has given to me, her love of soap operas (I's sure she would be sad to see them go), baking chocholate chip cookies with my cousins in her country kitchen and building blanket tents all over the kitchen, which seemed huge as a child but probably wasn't. Always fresh fried chicken every Sunday, but I never got to see the the chicken go from fresh to the fryer... and the thrill of baby chick in the chicken house. My children will never see these things.
