He was born Charles Rathbun, the son of Gideon Rathbun and his wife, Elizabeth J. Fitch. Gideon died when Charles was four years ago. He was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Charlotte Fitch Myers and Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Myers. His adoptive name is Frederick Myers. He enlisted in the United States Navy of May 5, 1884 in Washington, District of Columbia. He served on the "U. S. S. Alliance" and the " U. S. S. Louisiana." He served in peacetime and the Spanish American War. He was discharged on April 21, 1914. He was a chief yeoman.

He was married to Minnie Gregg in Marion, Ohio on December 31, 1889. They had three children with twins dying young. They divorced in 1918 and he moved west to Utah being married to Mary, a local well known artist of Ogden, Utah.
