Carl Wilhelm Fredericke Ziebell, born 1848 in Labes, Germany. Manitowoc Tribune, April 28, 1881 Fatal Accident on the RR On Monday morning last, the tracks on the main line of the MLS&W RR near the Two River switch, washed out carrying four men into the river, one of whom was either smothered or drowned and his body has not yet been recovered. His name was Charles Ceibel [sic] a resident of this city, he leaves a wife and five children, the youngest not more than a week old. The place where the accident occurred was a notoriously dangerous one; when the road was built a trussle [sic] bridge was put across, and when that became rotten it was filled in with sand leaving only a small culvert to carry off the water. The melting of the heavy snow had filled the basin formed by the railroads and the culvert was blocked. There was from 15 to 20 feet of water which saturated the sand and finally swept every thing before it. It was unknown to be unsafe on Saturday.Manitowoc Herald-Times 22 April 1931Washout on Shore road was 50 years agosunday, April 26, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the washout at the Two Rivers Junction of the old Lake Shore Railroad company, the washout coming as snowdrifts which had attained a height of over 30 feet during 'the big storm' were yielding to warm weather and the sunshine. One hundred feet of track toppled into the river as section Foreman Chas. Ziebell and his men were working on it, Mr Ziebell being carried along with it into the river and his body was never recovered. The accident was particularly tragic in that it left Mrs Ziebell with the care of her four small children, the oldest of which was seven years and the youngest only a week old. How she carried on is a story of pioneer courage and spirit and today all of the children are still in close contact with each other. The children, now grown to man and womanhood, are August and Charles Ziebell, Manitowoc; Miss Lena Ziebell, Brillion, and Mrs Minnie Pierce of Denver, Colorado.
