DEATH COMES TO MRS. SOPHIA SIMON AS SHE IS SEATED IN CHAIR AT HOME
Calm and peaceful was the death yesterday of Mrs. Sophia Simon,
widow of the late Dr. Franz Simon and a pioneer resident of the
city, who passed away while seated in her chair engaged in needle
work at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F.S. Luhman, So. Eighth
street, with whom she made her home. Mrs. Simon's death was
discovered by members of the family who entered her room some time
later and failing to secure a response when they spoke to Mrs. Simon,
found that she was dead. Mrs. Simon was 85 years of age.
Mrs. Simon, who despite her advanced age had enjoyed excellent health
was a devotee to needle work and daily busied herself with this work,
occupying herself every afternoon. Yesterday, as usual, she was engaged
in knitting and was apparently in her usual health. Her death which was
due to heart trouble, occurred sometime late in the afternoon while she
was alone and the discovery was a shock to members of the family. Born
at Main-on-the-Rhine April 10, 1830, Mrs. Simon was wedded there and
came to America with her husband in 1848, locating at New York. A few
years later the family removed to Two Rivers and later to this city
where they resided for years.
Dr. and Mrs. Simon made their home in Nebraska for a time and in late
years Mrs. Simon had resided with her daughter here. Two children, Mrs.
Luhman, of this city, and Dr. Frank Simon of Pender, Neb., survive Mrs.
Simon. Six grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held from the Luhman home at 2 o'clock Monday
afternoon, Rev. Grether officiating.
