WILLIAM SIMMER (d. 2009)

William J. Simmer, age 83, of 426 N. 10th St., Manitowoc, died on Tuesday
morning, Sept. 22, 2009, at his home.
William was born on April 26, 1926, in Manitowoc, son of the late William and
Lillian (Svacina) Simmer. He was a 1944 graduate of Lincoln High School.
William served our country with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South
Pacific Theatre on the USS Chestatee (AOG 49). He married the former LaVerne
Osulson in June 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manitowoc. She preceded
him in death in April 1974. On June 20, 1981, William married Shirley A.
Greenwold at First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc. William was employed at
the Manitowoc Company as an inspection foreman until his retirement in 1983.
William was a lifetime member of Otto Oas Post No. 659 of Manitowoc, where he
served for 60 years as a bugler on the Honor Guard and a lifetime member of the
Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent No. 23 of Green Bay. He also enjoyed the
Brewers, NASCAR, the Packers and going to Arizona in the winter.
William is survived by his wife: Shirley A. Simmer, Manitowoc; one daughter and
son-in-law: Sharon (Raymond) Brock, Tucson, Ariz.; one son: David J. Simmer,
Manitowoc; stepchildren: Richard (Belinda) Greenwold, Ocean Springs, Miss.;
Mary Greenwold, Manitowoc; Susan (Stephen) Foreman, Navarre, Fla.; Carol
Greenwold, Frisco, Tex.; Eric Greenwold, Merrimac; four grandchildren: Eric
(Ashley) Brock, Tucson, Ariz.; Keith (Jessica) Brock; Tucson, Ariz.; William
Brock, Tucson, Ariz.; Jennifer (Shawn) Posen, Two Rivers; five great-grandchildren:
Brittany, Alexia, and Alden Posen, Two Rivers; Owen and Arthur Brock, Tucson,
Ariz.; three stepgrandchildren: Richard, Rebecca, and Thomas Greenwold; three
sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Sr. Renita Tadych, Manitowoc; Kitty Sorenson,
Tex.; Dorothy (Buck) Cahoon, Alpena, Mich. Other sisters and brothers-in-law,
nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents:
William and Lillian Simmer; his first wife: LaVerne Simmer; one stepson: Michael
Greenwold.
Graveside services with full military rites will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday,
Sept. 28, 2009, at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may
gather at the cemetery entrance at 10:45 a.m. with a procession to the gravesite.
The VFW Otto Oas Post No. 659 of Manitowoc will accord military rites.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be directed to the VFW Otto Oas
Post No. 659 Honor Guard, c/o Shirley Simmer, 426 N. 10th St., Manitowoc, WI 54220.
The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family
with funeral arrangements.
