DEATH TAKES FRED SCHULTZ, OLD RESIDENT
Was Lieutenant of Oldest Militia Company in State
EARLY DAY CONTRACTOR IS DEAD
Ferdinand Schultz, early day contractor of the city, and in years past first
lieutenant of Co. A, Wisconsin national guard, the oldest organization of the
guard in Wisconsin, died at the Holy Family hospital Sunday morning after a
protracted illness due to a conplication of diseases. Burial will be held
Wednesday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Oberland.
Mr. Schultz had been a resident of the county since 1852, coming here when he
was six years old with his parents from Germany where he was born July 2, 1847.
The family located on a farm in the town of Meeme and Mr. Schultze (sic) came
to this city in 1872 and was years (sic) was engaged in business as a carpenter
contractor.
When Company A, said to have been the first national guard company of the state,
was organized, the late A. Becker was elected captain and Mr. Schultz became
first lieutenant of the company and served for a number of years.
Mr. Schultz, whose health of late years has not been robust, was removed to the
hospital several weeks ago and his condition had given little hope of recovery.
He is survived by eight children, Albert and Gustave, Milwaukee; William of New
York; Ferd. Jr., who is a member of the U.S. cavalry stationed at Fort Myers, Ma.;
Mrs. Henry Clemens, Mrs. Phillip Kahl, Mrs. Edward Oberland, this city, and Mrs.
Ernst Taite of Providence, R.I.

(The following is an article about his son Gustave in Milwaukee)
Gus. A. Schultz, a Manitowoc boy who has made his home in Milwaukee for several
years past, is meeting with success as a member of the Miller & Schultz
Publishing Co. The members of the company are both musicians and the publications
of late have contained many original compositions the latest of which, "Sunrise"
march and two-step, is just out. The authorship of "Sunrise" is credited to
Miller. Mr. Schultz recently published his own song, a rag time melody that made
a great hit. Schultz is the son of Ferd Schultz, of this city.
