Attack Fatal to Ald. Schroeder
Stricken While on Deer Hunting Trip (photo)
William Schroeder, 65, of 1413 South Seventh street, first ward
alderman and retired North Western road shop foreman, died this
morning while on a deer hunting trip in northern Wisconsin,
according to messages received in the city this afternoon. Death
was due to a sudden heart attack.
Alderman Schroeder had gone north with a party of friends late
last week. The telegram advising of his death came from Lanona,
Wis.
He was first elected to the city council in 1940, defeating Alderman
Chester Plantico, and has served continuously since that time.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mrs. Emma Schaetzke, three sons,
Reuben of Milwaukee, William Jr., of Parry Point, Md., and Milton of
Sheboygan; and four daughters, Mrs. Edward Berdedal and Mrs. Euguene
Maresch of this city, Mrs. James Costigan of Bronson, Mich., and Mrs.
Hans Bauer of Sheboygan.
Alderman Schroeder was employed for many years as foreman in the North
Western shops at Calumet yards and retired a few years ago.
Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced Friday.

Funeral services for Alderman William Schroeder, 65, who died suddenly
of a heart attack at Laona, Wis., Wednesday, while about to return home
from a deer hunting trip, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First
Reformed church, the Rev. A.C. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in
Evergreen cemetery.
Alderman Schroeder and his wife were all packed ready to come home,
when he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack.
Born in Manitowoc in 1881, he was employed by the North Western
railroad for 44 years, retiring May 1, this year. He had served as
first ward alderman since 1940.
The body may be viewed at the Shimek and Schwartz funeral home and will
be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to lie in state until the
hour of services.
