DEATH OF MRS. J. SCHROEDER SHOCK TO CITY
Wife of Ex-Mayor Passes Away a Home Early Today
Announcement of the death early today of Mrs. Marie Schroeder, wife of ex-Mayor
John Schroeder, came as a shock to the community and with an appalling sense of
personal loss to a large circle of personal friends who loved and admired her.
Mrs. Schroeder’s death occurred at the family home at 811 South Sixteenth street
at 10 o’clock this morning and her passing was calm and peaceful.
For several weeks Mrs. Schroeder’s condition had been considered critical and
there was little hope that she would survive an illness which attacked her
several months ago. Mrs. Schroeder underwent an operation at the hospital several
weeks ago and temporary relief was afforded but her health again failed and for
several days life had hung in the balance and the end today was not unexpected by
the family.
Funeral on Saturday
The funeral of Mrs. Schroeder will be held Saturday afternoon from the home at 2
o’clock, Rev. Symon officiating. Burial will be in this city, where decedent had
made her home since 1890. A brother, E. G. Raether, of Milwaukee, arrived last
evening, summoned by a message and was in time to see Mrs. Schroeder before her
death.
A Native of Milwaukee
Mrs. Schroeder, nee Marie Raeuber, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Raeuber,
1415 Washington street, and was born at Milwaukee on October 24, 1870, being 52
years of age at the time of her death. With her parents she removed to Marinette
in 1888 and two years later the family located in this city and on December 26,
1891, her marriage to Mr. Schroeder took place and they have since made their home
here.
Mrs. Schroeder was prominent in Eastern Star circles and as a member of the Pythian
Sisters. She was active in the Methodist church as a member of the ladies’ society
and had taken an active interest in charitable work in the city. During the war Mrs.
Schroeder was a member of the committee of ladies who assisted in the liberty loan
drives and with work of the Red Cross, devoting much of her time to the activities.
She was a lover of her home and family and found her chief enjoyment in life in the
family fireside and the welfare of her children.
Besides her husband Mrs. Schroeder is survived by five children, three sons--Edward,
Herbert and Alfred and two daughters, the Misses Alice and Clarice. Her aged parents,
five brothers and one sister also survive. The brothers are E.G. Raeuber of Milwaukee,
J.C. Raueber of Los Angeles, F. E. Raeuber of Kenosha, A. E. Raeuber of Fond du Lac
and William Raeuber of this city and the sister, Mrs. Carl Strattman of Milwaukee.
One sister, Miss Lucille Raueber, preceded her in death.
