HENRY SCHOLTEN

The Rev. Henry H. Scholten, 76, of St. Mary Home for the Aged, Manitowoc, and formerly of Manitowoc, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 14, at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Aloysius J. Wycislo, Bishop of Green Bay Diocese will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The Rev. Scholten was born Oct. 13, 1905, at Manitowoc, son of the late William and Margaret Kellner Scholten. He attended St. Bonfiace School and Manitowoc Public High School, graduating in 1921. He prepared for the priesthood in the minor and major departments of St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee. He attended seminary for seven years, and then went to summer school at Catholic University in Washington D.C. He was ordained June 1, 1933, by Bishop Paul Rhode at Green Bay Cathedral. Father Scholten's first Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, on June 3, 1933. His first appointment was as assistant at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sturgeon Bay. He then served as assistant at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oshkosh, where he remained until accepting a pastoral position at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Aurora, Wis., and the parishes at Pembine and Black Creek. Father Scholten was later appointed to St. Dennis Catholic Church, Shiocton, and St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Navarino. These were missions at the time of his appointment which later became parishes. He remained there for years and was appointed chaplain at St. Vincent DeVilla Old Age Home, New London, for five years. He then went to St. Paul Home, Kaukauna, and served as chaplain. In January of 1979, he retired to St. Mary Home for the Aged, Manitowoc.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Amanda M. Johnson of Manitowoc; three nieces, Kathleen Keil of Manitowoc, Mary Ann Lies of Burlington, Iowa, and Jane Ellen Krowe of Neenah, and two nephews, Glenn E. Johson and William Scholten of Manitowoc. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Edwin J.
Reception of the body by clergy, relatives and friends, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, will be 4 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Philip Hoffmann reading the prayers for the welcoming of the body into church. A prayer service will be held 8 p.m. Thursday by Rev. William Zimmer. Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is in charge of arrangements.
