John was the seventh child of John Martin and Alice Louise (Humphreys) Polhemus. His siblings were Mattie, who died in infancy about four years before John was born, Arthur James, Carrie, Winifred Odessa,George Nelson, Charles Stevens, and Alice Josephine, who was born about two years after his death.

The Holdrege newspaper reported that John was two months old when he died. Prairie Home Cemetery records indicate that he was 17 weeks old. His father's Bible gives his date of death as 20 February 1901. The Prairie Home Cemetery records indicate the date of death as 19 February 1901. Obviously, either his father entered the incorrect date in the Bible or the cemetery worker made a mistake when recording the date. If poor little John was two months old when he died as the newspaper states and his date of death 19 February 1890, his birth date would have been 25 December 1900. If he was two months old and died on 20 February, his birth date would have been 26 December 1900. If he lived to be 17 weeks old and the date of death shown in the cemetery records correct, little John would have been born 23 October 1890. That's certainly confusing, isn't it. When I have time and IF I remember, I'll rewrite the bio so it's a little more clear. Sorry, everyone!
