GUSTAV BOEDER

Gustave Boeder, first city fireman hired when Manitowoc graduated from the
volunteer system to a regular full-time fire department, died Sunday at his
home, 934 South 12th street. He was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pfeffer funeral home,
the Rev. A. C. Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Boeder was born in this city in 1857 and in 1881 married Miss Emilie
Latzig. The wedding took place in a setting unique in the annals of Manitowoc
weddings. It was read in the old frame fire station located at the foot of
North Seventh street. The bride’s cousin, Fire Chief August Dueno, was host
at the wedding.
For 15 years after the couple’s marriage Mr. Boeder worked at the Rahr brewery.
He joined the volunteer fire department in 1892, and in 1900 became a member
of the regular department in which he was also lineman, taking care of the fire
alarm boxes. He retired in 1915.
In 1941 Mr. and Mrs. Boeder observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary and
among the guests were members of the Fire department, who took Mr. Boeder for
a short ride on one of the motor pumpers as a reminder of the “good old days.”
Mrs. Boeder died two years ago.
Survivors are two sons, William and Walter of this city; daughter, Mrs. Fred H.
Laufenburg of Milwaukee; two brothers, Robert and William of this city; five
sisters, Mrs. Adolph Lentz, Mrs. Mary Grattenthaler, Miss Gusta Boeder, Mrs.
Helen Pansky, all of Milwaukee, Mrs. Christ Duebner of this city; and four
grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home from Tuesday noon until the hour of
the services.
