Joe Park Whitener, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Mr.Whitener was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Burke County to the late Jason Park Whitener and Jonsie Berry Whitener.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn W. Martin and Inez Whitener and brothers, Oren B. Whitener and Paul Whitener.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruby Propst Whitener; a son, Michael J. Whitener of Hickory; a daughter, Susan W. Denning and her husband, James M. Denning Jr.; and grandchildren, James Park Denning and Kathryn Elizabeth Denning of Raleigh.

Mr. Whitener was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and choir member for more than 60 years, in addition to many other positions.

He served as an attorney in Hickory from 1949 until his retirement in 2005. He was a graduate of Duke University Law School. He was qualified for practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Whitener was a member of the N.C. Bar Association and past president of the Catawba County
Bar Association. Mr. Whitener was a former city of Hickory municipal court judge and attorney for the town of Long View for 30 years. He was a member of the Hickory Exchange Club, he served as past president. He was part owner of Carving Craft Inc. and American Slate and Marble Inc. He served in the U.S. Army and was in Officer's Candidate School at the war's end.

Joe Whitener was a devoted husband and father, who was a lifelong rock for his wife and children. He wag a dedicated son and brother to his family. His church was always a priority in his life. Mr. Whitener was known for his honesty, integrity and kindness to all, in every walk of life. Joe was an avid pool player who spent his lunch hour for more than 50 years at the Arcade Billiards (the pool room). Mr. Whitener's tomato and lettuce sandwich was named by his friends "The Perry Mason." His philosophy of life could be summarized in the words of John Wesley: "Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can."

A funeral service will be held for Mr. at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Bethel Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Stevens will officiate.

Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
