"James H. Thomas died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. W. Russell, in Utica, August 16th, 1921. His funeral was held in the Methodist Episcopal church in Westville, Thursday afternoon, August 18th, conducted by the Rev. N. B. Ripley, and the burial was in the Westville cemetery. Mr. Thomas was born in Westville, January 20th, 1838. Early in life he was united in marriage with Marietta Palmer daughter of Daniel and Jane Palmer, of Westville. Two daughters were born to them, the above mentioned daughter, and Miss Lena Thomas of New York, who, with the widow survive him. Mr. Thomas was an active business man, for fourteen years being associated with his son-in-law, T. W. Russell, in Binghamton, and later he was engaged in business in New York, which has been his place of residence since his removal from Binghamton. He retired from business about ten years ago ... Always quiet and unassuming in his friendships, genial as a comanion, a man of strictly moral purpose, Mr. Thomas was a fine type of Christian gentleman. He passed away with all his family about him, and was fittingly laid away amid the beautiful scene of his young manhood." [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Aug. 26, 1921, p. 7]
