" William and Elizabeth (Grant) Ward were m. in England, and embarking at Hull, between Feb. 28 and March 7, 1774, came from Yorkshire to Nova Scotia in the ship Two Friends. Their rent had been raised by John Matthews [ who had an estate at Guisborough, Yorkshire], their landlord [the Ward's were Yeoman Farmers] and they came to America "to seek a better livelihood." See N. E. Hist. & Gen. Reg., Vol 63, p. 28. With them came their eldest child, Moses, aged 18 months. They first lived in Windsor, but soon settled at Beech Hill. Note: John Matthews, 'an agent', lived at Guisborough, owned. He was one of the larger land holders in the area. He lived from providing finance and mortgages, to businesses and traders, as well as from the rental incomes he received from his ever increasing land holdings. After the enclosure of the Common lands, most English farmers had to rent their farmland from larger land owners. Sometimes these larger owners were not farmers in their own right, but simply people who owned large estates and who lived off the incomes from the estates. During the 1770s, Guisborough's farmers' rents soared as local landowners decided to create more opulent country homes for themselves. The yeoman farmers, people, who earlier in the century had been 'people of substance' themselves, were being squeezed off their farms by their landlords in order to provide more rental income for large landholders.
